SHELBY TOWNSHIP FIRE CHIEF

The Charter Township of Shelby, in Macomb County, Michigan is a 36-square-mile suburban community in southeast Michigan with approximately 80,000 residents. The Township's peaceful residential setting, 1,200 acres of serene parks, many recreational opportunities, and award-winning schools make Shelby Township a better place to live, learn, play and do business. The Township's full-service Fire Department employs 80 Full-Time Sworn Professionals working 24-hour shifts to provide the metro Detroit region's best, state of the art, pace setting, life, and property preservation and emergency services to the community. The Department operates 5 Fire Stations with 7 Engines, 2 Ladder Trucks, 8 Ambulances and additional specialized equipment. It also boasts specialized teams in Dive Rescue, Hazmat Response, Swift Water Rescue, Technical Rescue, Peer Support, and a trained Tactical Response partnership with the Shelby Township Police Department. A dedicated millage of 3.1167 mills funds Shelby Township Fire Department operations. The Department has an operating budget of $20.2 million and a fund balance of $8.9 million.

On behalf of the Shelby Township Board of Trustees, the Police and Fire Civil Service Commission is accepting applications for the position of Fire Chief. The position shall be filled in accordance with the following qualifications:

  • Three (3) or more years in command rank equivalent to Shelby Township Captain
  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Public Safety Administration, Fire Science, or related field
  • NFPA Fire Officer I and II Certifications
  • NIMS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, 800 Certifications
  • External Applicants must possess at least 20 years' experience in a Fire Department which has provided ALS transport during at least 10 years of the candidate's experience, and which serves a population of at least 50,000 residents.

The current salary for this role is $130,000 annually, accompanied by a competitive benefits package. Starting compensation for the selected candidate will be based on qualifications, including relevant experience and education.

The process to establish the eligibility list will consist of an assessment center with a minimum passing score of 75%. In-person interviews with the Board of Trustees will be held with the three (3) top-ranked persons on the eligibility list.
