Organic Farmer (6356)

Location: Huntsville, Texas

Job Number: 6356

The Organic Farmer will work on a certified organic farm to plant, cultivate, and harvest medicinal herbs, vegetables, and fruits using various equipment and tools. Duties include tilling organic soil; transplanting, weeding, thinning, or pruning organic crops; cleaning, packing, and loading harvested products; as well as participating in irrigation and organic property maintenance activities. The organic farmer strives for sustainability, and the enhancement of soil fertility and biological diversity without the use of inorganic fertilizers and synthetic chemical herbicides, synthetic pesticides or genetically modified organisms. This includes incorporating the company’s marketing strategies with key performance indicators for a variety of herbage and plants, while following all organic standards, state and federal regulations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Plant, cultivate, inspect and harvest crops;
Irrigate farm soil and maintain ditches or pipes and pumps;
Operate, clean, and maintain farm machinery;
Must have an ecological knowledge of the dynamic interplay between food system, farming, natural world, society, and individuals;
Strong communication skills; ability to work with your team members and the community at large;
Ability to lift up to 50+ pounds repeatedly and do physical labor 40+ hrs/wk;
Possess qualities such as self-motivation, time management, creativity, flexibility and cooperation;
Be able to work in a field or greenhouse;
Must be available for occasional evening and weekend hours;
Hold a current and valid driver’s license with a clean driving record;
Be comfortable driving the farm truck and operating farm equipment;
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:
A minimum of 3 years full-season agricultural experience;
Prior farm experience required;
Organic Certification is a bonus
